Ralf Fuecks

President
Heinrich Boell Foundation

Ralf Fücks was born in 1951 in Edenkoben (Palatinate). While at university, studying social sciences, economics, and political science, he was active in the student movements in Heidelberg and Bremen.

Ralf Fücks joined the Green Party in 1982. In 1985 he was elected to the Bremen state parliament. He served as Co-President for the national Green Party in 1989/90. During this period he strongly advocated transforming the Greens into a reform party which, jointly with the social democrats, should be striving for new political majorities and coalitions.

He returned to regional politics in Bremen in 1991, serving as Deputy Mayor and as Senator for Urban Development and Environmental Protection. He held that position until 1995 when the green-liberal-social democrat coalition collapsed due to fundamental different positions with the Liberal Party on urban development.

Ralf Fücks has been a member of the executive board of the Heinrich Böll Foundation since 1996. Together with his colleagues, he rebuilt the foundation completely, moving its headquarters to Berlin. In November 2011, he was re-elected for a fourth term. The primary focus of his work is on sustainable development, reshaping the welfare state, migration, the future of European integration, and on foreign policy. He is responsible for the divisions of domestic political education, Europe and North America, German-Israeli-Relations as well as for the foundation’s scholarship program.

As a member of the Green Party’s Program Commission he co-authored the new party program which was adopted in spring 2002. In 2000 the Minister for the Interior, Otto Schily, appointed him member of the non-partisan commission on migration which presented its final report in July 2001.

In 1991, he was editor of the book "Sind die Grünen noch zu retten?" (‘Is There a Future for the Green Party?’). He is a regular contributor to numerous newspapers and political periodicals and co-author to numerous books. In addition he is the author of the book “Intelligent Wachsen – Die grüne Revolution” which was published in 2013. In 2015 the book was translated to English and released under the title “Green Growth – Smart Growth: A New Approach to Economics, Innovation and the Environment”. In 2016, the Polish and Russian translation was published.

Luis Crespo, Secretary General of Protermosolar, has been reelected president of the European solar thermal, the European Association of Solar Thermal Power Industry (ESTELA), at the General Meeting held today in Brussels. The new mandate provides for a period of two years.

In its work program, Luis Crespo has offered concentrate their efforts on the value proposition of solar thermal energy is recognized throughout the world, so that all countries not only define a target share of renewables in electricity generation but They begin to demand an increasingly important contribution of manageable technologies such as solar thermal, in that proportion. ESTELA, which according to its new statutes is no longer association of European but Euro-Mediterranean area, aims to influence the deployment of this technology in all parts of the world that have sufficient solar resources for implementation, thus contributing to enhancing the role of leadership of European industry and particularly the Spanish. The R & D has received a special reference to the candidacy of Luis Crespo, who believes that the industry should selectively support those technological developments in the solar thermal sector with compatible features implicit storage systems feasible and economical. Also, Crespo has advocated greater coordination between the centers of European R & D with new structures that optimize the dialogue with industry and community institutions, avoiding costly duplications and strengthening excellence in the areas of expertise of each.

Protermosolar is the association representing the Spanish industry and thermoelectric solar industry is composed of about 70 members. Solar thermal technology, in which Spain is a leader internationally, has recently burst onto the landscape of renewable energies worldwide and is currently the one with the highest growth potential for its manageability and storage capacity for its high local job creation and its potential for cost reduction. The installed capacity in Spain is 2,304 MW and the contribution of Spanish companies in international markets is 70%.

Hybrid Alkaline Supercapacitor (HAS) and Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cell Solutions - Powering the Next Generation of Energy Storage

Abstract:

With global energy consumption constantly on the rise, alternative energy storage solutions are in high demand. The electrification of the transportation industry and the continued push for green energy has spurred the automotive and transportation market to seek improved energy storage elements that combine both high energy and power – and are available in a smaller size and at a lower cost. Our Hybrid Aqueous/Alkaline Supercapacitor (HAS) and Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cell (AMFC) solutions offer a new approach to energy storage and conversion. Our product portfolio will be outlined together with an overview on the advantages and novelty of both HAS and AMFC technologies, with specific emphasis on the design and development of novel materials for enhanced and reliable performance.

This R&D project is partially supported by the Alternative Fuels Administration and by Israel Innovation Authority.

Special Proposed Regional Opportunities: Sophisticated Grid Management and New Storage Solution

Abstract:

Abstract: Electricity grids are still based on antiquated concepts and technologies. This creates obstacles on the integration of large scale and intermittent renewable energy sources, and makes it difficult to improve the efficiency of the system. When talking today on "smart grid" we typically mean a sophisticated control on the demand of the end users. There is a way to dramatically increase the efficiency of the grid by introducing modern sensors,  IT and DSS at all levels: generation, transportation and distribution as well as the end users. This can enable the handling of smart micro-grids, integration of renewable sources, smarter storage and substantial saving of energy and pollution. Breakage maintenance can be replaced by efficient preventive maintenance and most of the major and expensive outage cases can be prevented. The proposed improvements have very attractive (short) payback periods. In places close to deep water it is possible to use a new large storage, based on compressing air during the times of surplus production, and releasing it for activating turbines during periods of high demand. Prof, Kahane will be happy to supply more information at:
